Don't Miss the IRR17 Deadline

If your company uses x-ray equipment you need to make sure you re-register on the new IRR17!
The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) are changing the way they categorise businesses that use equipment such as x-ray machines.

The IRR17 (Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017) came into force on January 1st 2018 and replaces the IRR99.

Your Radiation Protection Advisor (RPA), may well have already advised you of the forthcoming changes from the HSE. However, if this is entirely new to you then here is a quick overview to help you understand the reason for change and how to make sure you re-register in time.

Until now, all companies were required to register on the IRR99 to ensure the HSE is aware of all companies using radiation emitting equipment.

The HSE would know like to make this information more useful by determining and categorising the register according to risk level.

As a result, you will be asked a few more questions when you re-register to help the HSE categorise your business accordingly. Your x-ray inspection equipment remains very low risk level, however it is necessary to ensure you follow this registration process to adhere to the HSE rules and regulations. The HSE do carry out spot checks on businesses and the IRR17 register will be part of their checklist.

In summary:

  • If you have radiation emmiting equipment, such as x-ray equipment from Cheyney, you need to re-register with the HSE.
  • The deadline for registration is 5th February 2018.
  • Even if you have registered before (on the IRR99), you must re-register on the new IRR17.
Visit this link to the HSE website which details the IRR17 in full. It will guide you through the registration process and doesn't ask for any documentation or detailed questions that you should not already have in place.

Remember, you need to have registered on the IRR17 by the 5th February. We would encourage you to seek advice from your RPA if you have any concerns or questions about this change. Alternatively, contact Cheyney and one of our team can help you with this process.
